Comments: hi again newbie, sorry forgot to say that if you are certain that you want to live here then nipsells isnt a bad road but it does suffer for cars speeding at all hours so please consider that with regards to your little ones.there are speed bumps up one end but they have little effect.also try ,in my opinion,to aviod estates such as bramley way, orchard way etc and the abbey estate which is tern close, teal close etc these areas i dont think are that nice and it seems to be where a lot of the less sociable villagers tend to live.hope this helps regards ernie.
User_comment ernie on 03 Sep 2010
Comments: hi newbie, you will get the people here who think their kids can do what they want thats for sure and there are plenty of them.its a good idea to avoid st peters though as you have said.if i were you maybe id look at st lawrence for houses as the prices seem similar and i think its a much nicer area than mayland is at this present time.regards ernie.

Comments: Hi Ernie and everyone else.... Hmm, It's difficult. I live in a village at the moment near Colchester and I must admit it is nice but the children here are horrid not in a chav way but in a "I'm better then you as my parents are rich and I can bully you because my parents think I'm great whatever I do" sort of way. Our main reason for moving however is because we need a bigger house and cannot afford one in our current village. We have a 3 bed house currently and have 5 children. Not sure if having 5 children will make other people think we are chav's ourselves or not but we are most definitely not. School wise....secondary school I would send my child to Plume at Maldon and if no places available would homeschool her until there was, primarily because she has learning difficulties and Burnham is on special measures AND has no special needs co-ordinators. My other children?, well 2 would go to the primary school at Mayland and 1 of them would carry on going to the school he is at now as he is dyspraxic and therefore needs a school with a speech unit attached. My other child is only 2 but is likely to be homeschooled due to having a condition (metabolic) that would make it difficult for a school to have him without due concern from myself. Incidentally the house we have been looking at is at Nipsells Chase, not sure if that is a good part or not? My brother lives at Steeple and seems to like it there and that's pretty close? Anyway we are still undecided at present. House prices there are very good but we could still buy something in a village on the outskirts of Colcheter for similar money.

Best thing: ?
Worst thing: loutish yobs fuelled by drugs or drink
Comments: as said previously, could be a great place but its yob rule here these days and getting worse.its a fact that the bus company that was running the school buses into mayland to st peters criminal academy school as its known locally were always getting their buses damaged.apparently they had no problems at any other places just mayland.says alot i think.glad i dont live here anymore, but i do know some decent people who do.hopefully i can get better but it needs a decent level of policing thats for sure.

Best thing: Moving Away
Worst thing: Living Here
Comments: I think people on here should stop blaiming Londoners and other people moving in from other areas and look at themselves, im sure there are some great kids here but a large majority are trouble there rude, disrespectful and because there is hardly any police cover here they get away with what they want and there parents should take responsibilty and stop wrapping them up in Cotton wool and stop blaiming people moving in !! as a place it could be lovely but there is a big drug problem here and alot of boy racers and no police to patrol it. If anyone asked me if id advise moving here id say definately not its turning into a horrible troublesome area. There are some lovely people here (from all over) but it is fast being outnumbered by yobs druggies and boy racers and it is getting out of hand.
User_comment kim on 25 Aug 2010
Best thing: A safe and lovely place to live.
Worst thing: unfair comments about the children and youth of mayland
Comments: I actually think the people who write this stuff on here, either do not live in Mayland or they are trying to put new people off from moving here.
User_comment philip on 24 Aug 2010
Best thing: pub
Worst thing: yet another housing estate being built
Comments: just found this site.there seem to be mixed opinions on the place, but i agree it could be so much better with more pro active policing.but theres far worse places to live and as ernie said property is cheap here you can have a castle on average working mans money, dont know if thats such a good thing as it does seem to attract more than a fair share of chav types but once im indoors i dont really care what they do.
User_comment ernie on 23 Aug 2010
Best thing: as before
Worst thing: as before
Comments: hi newbie, there are worse places than mayland im sure but if you have children personally i would look elsewhere as the local secondary school,st peters,is on special measures.i dont know about the local primary school as my children are grown up and live miles away.as ive said previously this could be a much better place but there are certain elements that want it to be a ghetto and they seem to be having their way, albeit slowly, but nevertheless they are getting what they want.if i was you,and im not,i would look elsewhere.i know the attraction of a big house for pennies is great but think, how many areas in the uk that have problems are areas where housing costs are lower.i dont have the statistics but you can bet that there are plenty.it is a fact that local authorities house a lot of less socible families etc in this area as the cost of housing to the stste is obviously much lower than other areas.ive lived here years and i never thought id leave but my house is for sale and its time to go.you may wonder why i say all this if i want to sell my house? well i dont and wont lie to anyone.
User_comment newbie on 20 Aug 2010
Comments: I am looking to buy a house here...........please please tell me that it isn't as bad as some comments would have me think? Teenagers can be a problem wherever you go but please tell me this is a nice village in which to bring up my children?
User_comment ernie on 20 Aug 2010
Best thing: semi rural setting
Worst thing: certain young yobs either on drugs or drunk
Comments: it could be a great place to live but it requires more policing thats for sure.ive witnessed kids as young as 12 and 13 taking drugs and reported it to police who were not that interested.my house is for sale as i can see how this place is going to the wall.its a real shame but i think youve got to be honest and realise that in years to come this could be a ghetto.unfortunately we attract the less socially capable people here as where else are you going to get a 4 bed detached house for around £200.000.people tend to come here from east london, basildon etc after being driven out by the influx of immigrants and bring their anti social ways and drug culture with them.this does not include eveybody i will agree but there is excessive amounts of anti social behaviour here for the size of the place which is not,in my opinion,a village now it is a small town.after living here 22 years i find there is no fight left in people to try and live decent lives anymore and it will be mob rule here soon.would i advise anyone to move here? probably not especially if they have young children.im sad to say it but both my wife and i will be glad to leave although sorry that we feel its the only way we will feel safe as we get older.you never know one day it may get better but you the residents have to fight for it,i gave up a long time ago.

Best thing: the sea wall walk
User_comment Andy on 19 Aug 2010
Best thing: The river walks and Peace & Quiet
Worst thing: Occasional Boy Racer (But I think they are everywhere)
Comments: Lovely peaceful village with excellent amenities, some great walks and places to eat and drink.
User_comment Sam on 16 Aug 2010
Best thing: Horny Toad
Comments: re sharrons comment, there was never any trouble in the General, the food was pretty good the beer was not as dear and it was open to everyone and it was far busier that what the new pub is. there are lots of comments on here that seem to prefer the pub as the general even though it was in a mess. shame the new owners didnt just do it up but kept some of the old attractions like the pool table and atmosphere. seems like i am not alone in thinking this. it is a shame because come the winter i cant see hardys working.
User_comment Sharron on 16 Aug 2010
Best thing: Hardys
Worst thing: Shop Shuts at 9pm
Comments: Absolutly love the new pub, its clean and inviting. Excellent Food and Beer. Finally a safe place to drink & go for a meal in Mayland. Never went in the General Lee but heard a lot about the pub, and would never have given it my custom.
User_comment Sam on 16 Aug 2010
Best thing: Mayland Village FC
Worst thing: Not having after match drinks and playing pool at the genny with my mates
Comments: Miss the general lee, was a good laugh with the pool team and the theme nights...all gone now. New pub is clean and looks nice but its just not the same. I am 20 so I aint welcome. Won't bother going when I am 21 will give my custom to the toad who welcome me now!!!
User_comment Martin on 13 Aug 2010
Best thing: living in a nice village
Worst thing: nothing that bad
Comments: Nice place. Nice People. Agree with comments about Hardy's, not a village pub at all, losts its mojo now.
User_comment Mags Bishop on 09 Aug 2010
Best thing: Good place to live, nice walks, nice people.
Worst thing: Miserable moaners who complain about all the children here and make it out to much worse than it is.
Comments: Mayland is a good place to live, especially if you have children.
User_comment kay martin on 05 Aug 2010
Best thing: lovely walks, safe and nice place to live
Worst thing: needs an all weather sports pitch for the long winter months
Comments: I have lived here for 9 years. Kids are safe to play out. Everybody knows everyone. Very friendly. Love Zara's and Rickshaw. We have some good shops especially All Seasons! Some people in Mayland just don't realise how lucky they are to live here.
User_comment Frank on 05 Aug 2010
Best thing: People
Worst thing: Proposed motel behind hardys cafe (not much of a pub)
Comments: Love Mayland and the people hope planning permission is not awarded to the proposed plans of building a motel and more flats. Flats are hard to shift in Mayland so I figure lots of short lets to unsavoury characters. No thanks!
User_comment John Buckley on 31 Jul 2010
Best thing: Friendly people, safe for kids.
Worst thing: A few boy racers.
Comments: I like living here. Zara and Rickshaw are nice places to eat. Good little row of shops. Gutted about Hardys, can't have a pint and a game of pool with my son there now as he is only 20 I agree with the other comments, its very dull in there now, no life at all can't see it surviving the winter, shame as a few tv's for sport and a pool table could have made it more of a village community pub.
User_comment Maureen on 31 Jul 2010
Best thing: living in an almost crime free area, nice people, community spirit
Worst thing: People moaning about the children who live here, most of whom are decent good young people like my grandchildren.
Comments: I have read the previous posts and can only come to the conclusion that the off putting remarks on here are to deter more people moving to our lovely safe village. Its a smashing place to live, and I have lived here for 30 years so I think I would know!!!
User_comment Jenny on 30 Jul 2010
Best thing: Love living here
Worst thing: A few bad kids that give the ignorants a chance to tar all kids.
Comments: Sick of people moaning about the kids here. There a few bad ones but the majority are great, hardly any crime at all. Agree with the comments about Hardys menu, will not be eating or drinking in there again. Shame as the General Lee had good atmosphere even if it was grubby.
User_comment Sue Walker on 30 Jul 2010
Best thing: really safe place to live, nice and friendly
Comments: Not sure about the comments below about crime and teen crime etc, they must be thinking of somewhere else!!! Laughed when I read in local rag about pub rescued, the general lee was rough to look at I agree but at least it was a village pub for all, with a pool and dart team, theme nights. The new pub is dead, no soul, not that friendly, very poor yet expensive menu. Would have prefered the General to stay as it was rather than what it has turned into. Hardys did not rescue village pub, it ruined it.
User_comment Shanni & Charlie on 27 Jul 2010
Comments: OMG Was thinking of moving here, but after reading these comments I DONT THINK SO !!!!
User_comment Steve on 26 Jul 2010
Best thing: Quiet and peaceful. River views and walks.
Worst thing: Problem youths in the parks - give youngsters a bad name.
Comments: Mayland is a fantastic place to live - we are so pleased to live here. The new pub (Hardys) is so good - just what Mayland needed - it's bright, fresh, run by a great family and a classy place to visit for a drink & food.
User_comment john smith on 26 Jul 2010
Best thing: new pub,indian restaurant
Worst thing: yobs
Comments: ok if you like drunk and druggie teens running riot.some decent people left but a lot want to get out(just check rightmove).just full now of low lifes who bring the place down.just ask people outside of mayland and see what they think, they call it the bronx.glad i left a few years ago when i saw it was going down hill.feel sorry for the few decent people still there.dont think i would return except for a visit to friends and even then i would make sure that my car and belongings were adequately secured.thats the sort of place it has become unforunately.
User_comment Ellan on 23 Jul 2010
Best thing: A good place to live
Worst thing: Hardys - not a village pub at all, completely destroyed the atmosphere that the General had, I know it was rough to look at but at least it was busier than hardys is. Also the unfair label teenage kids have been given by some in this village, a handful o
Comments: I hope planning permission is not given behind the new pub, apparently for a motel...I am thinking lots of homeless placed there... oppose the planning permission ....no more flats in Mayland they are not needed!
User_comment simon on 26 Jun 2010
Best thing: river walks
Worst thing: village has become a haven for chav type anti social families
Comments: as said previously, why do all the anti social families congregate here?.cheap housing i guess.maybe one day they will all move on.
User_comment Hels on 18 Jun 2010
Best thing: The River
Worst thing: Dog poo on the sea wall
Comments: Have lived here for a year now and love it. The views across the bay are really beautiful. Haven't seen any problems at all and can only assume it depends on which road you live in.
User_comment Liz on 05 Jun 2010
Best thing: Moving out
Worst thing: yobby folk who think of no one but themselves
Comments: So glad to be away from Mayland. Some friendly people but the number of teen/twenties renting houses/flats and subjecting everyone to noisy parties, excess drinking and drug taking. The police aren't interested in dealing with it, who really wants to spend their leisure time listening to other people screaming obscenities. Seriously, something needs to be done to stop this culture turning what used to be a nice village into a hell hole.
User_comment ruth on 17 May 2010
Best thing: river
Worst thing: drunken and drug fuelled teens are a pain
Comments: cant understand why this town has become a magnet for chavvy families as there is not much here.i suppose its,as previously mentioned, cheap housing.i hear from friends that latchingdon is the same now aswell so i guess it looks like all the dengies may go the same way.shame really but what can we do?.may consider moving out if it gets much worse but for now ive started locking everything up,something ive never done in the last 10 years of living here.oh well welcome to mayland in 2010 i guess!!
User_comment sue on 16 May 2010
Best thing: none
Worst thing: drugs and the low lifes that live here
Comments: moved away best thing i done hate the place so much
User_comment darren on 14 May 2010
Best thing: cheap houses
Worst thing: nuisance youths and getting worse
Comments: there are worse places to live but as this is a a small town anti social behaviour seems to stand out more.its a shame as if it was policed correctly it would be okay.however at the moment i can only see it getting worse.i suppose as housing is really cheap in comparison with more built up areas we are going to get more than our fair share of loutish type families and it has also become a place where housing association and local council locate larger families as the rental market is cheaper here for larger properites.hopefully it will get better but for now i doubt it.

Best thing: Very quiet and extremely friendly
Worst thing: All these idiots writing foolish things making out Mayland is such a horrible place to live!
Comments: I've lived in Maylandsea for 24yrs of my life and i can only recall 1 bad thing ever happening to me and my family. That was around 10yrs ago the badges from our car were taken! WOW! 10YEARS AGO! It really is a lovely place, it might not be for everyone as its miles from...well anything, but very nice with excellent quisine (Chippy, Chinese, Curry House), all of them are very good. I'm greeted every morning with a good morning from fellow villagers. Your going to get a little trouble from time to time, but thats just a few people. You will get that anywhere. All in All a damn great place to live and to bring up your family.

Best thing: ?? youre joking right
Worst thing: nusiance yobs either drunk or on drugs.seen them taking drugs at the school bus stop!!!
Comments: im off, sold my house to a company that specialises in renting propertys to eastern europeans(just what you lot here deserve).couldnt sell it normally as not many people want to live here(estate agents words)so had to sell it to these people instead.still i expect our european friends will bring alot of culture to the area.

Best thing: The Quientess
Worst thing: Damn Speed Bumps
Comments: Well Ive lived here 6 years and love the village, I spent most of my teenage years hanging around in Mayland, sure we use to get drunk do drugs cause trouble but well who didnt, quite often down the General the old boys tell stories of what they use to get up to, so who ever thinks its us young ones who ruin the place your wrong and hypocrits, I adore mayland and would never move anywhere else, unless of course these damn houses they are building at the top of my road in Teal Avenue get given to damn immigrants.

Comments: this is a great village i have lived for 32 years it is a great shame there is not more police as the youth population are a pain
User_comment Anne Clarke on 05 Mar 2010
Best thing: sea front walks
Worst thing: litter
Comments: lived here 32 years, enjoy the village, feel sad at times its grown so big, increased litter is most upsetting and spoils the look of it. New supermarket is good, New Seasons great, I look forward to seeing the newly refurbished pub.i like living here.People are generally friendly, recently had a fall on the sea wall and had a great deal of help from strangers who were out walking too.

User_comment dave on 02 Oct 2009
Comments: almost forgot,2 houses burgaled in same road last week.young lad badly beaten up by gang of youths on way home from night out in village.peoples rubbish bags being thrown all over the roads and pavements(witnessed by a resident not me).LOVELY PLACE!!!

Best thing: see my last post
Worst thing: see my last post
Comments: In response to the ANONYMOUS RESIDENT try telling the young boy and his family who was mugged that its safe to walk around. If you read the current mayland mayl(as im sure you do)you will find that there is quite alot of vandalism and wilful destruction in this so called village.maybe you should come out from behind your rose tinted glasses and face the truth that this housing estate in a field is going rapidly down hill.I accept that as a whole society in the uk is a mess and there are worse places than mayland, but while people like yourself believe that mayland is utopia im afraid that nothing will change here and it will get worse.
User_comment Mrs Beaumont on 15 Sep 2009
Best thing: Excellent walking in the are Marina lovely
Comments: A nice place to live. Park very convienient for the children.
User_comment A happy resident! on 15 Sep 2009
Best thing: Rural location with the amenities of a town
Worst thing: Chelmsford postcode - it is 15 miles away!
Comments: In response to the negative comments from Chippy and Chippier! It is a sad reflection on society today when open access to web sites allows weirdos to post such defamatory comments. Yes, there is a lack of facilities for teenagers and they do congregate in groups. Yes, there is evidence of (minor) vandalism - and no doubt drugs (although personally we have seen no evidence). But we do not think it is worse than other areas in the UK and probably a lot better. Having lived in the heart of the village for 18 years and not been affected by any of this, we find the statement that the streets are unsafe to walk at night absolutely ludicrous. The people, including the kids, that we have known over the years are great. I think the Chippys would have a problem wherever they lived!

Comments: see you later you in bred wierdos.you all deserve each other.

Best thing: someone may buy my house so i can leave!!!
Worst thing: drugged up yobs, vandalism, dog poo,
Comments: yobos everywhere, no respect for anything or anyone.seems like all the trouble families from elsewhere turn up here with their mates.shame really as could be nice place if it was cleaned up but 2 pcso,s in a smart car is hardly effective.wouldnt want to retire here as would be concerned about walking around at night as so many drunk and drugged up yobs around.some people wont agree but i think thats because they dont like people to know what its really like here.i lived in east london for 30 years and mayland is really no better.ive never met so many false people in my life.its not a village its a housing estate surrounded by fields.cant wait to leave like the last person who posted on here.
User_comment dave on 06 Jul 2009
Best thing: the road out of here
Worst thing: full of druggies, crime has risen in all catergories(police figures)
Comments: could be a nice place, bit not policed properly.youngsters think they are part of the krays.one young lad was mugged in the drive.people here need to wake up and make a stand.lived here 6 years cant wait to get out before it really goes down hill.
User_comment Rob on 03 Jul 2009

Comments: we even have peacocks sitting up in trees down nipsells chase, they walk around the village and will not get out of the road! Its not too big and its not too small, its just right!
